THE FUN STARTS TONIGHT AT RURAL HILL
LOCH
NORMAN HIGHLAND GAMES 2008

HUNTERSVILLE, NC:  The fun starts TONIGHT, Friday, April 18, at Rural Hill and the Loch Norman Highland Games.  Gates open at 5:30 PM along with the food court and beverage service.  The Games kick off with music at the entertainment tent at 7 PM followed by the Call to the Clans at 8:15 PM. Tonight’s admission is $8 and parking is free.  For more information and event details, visit www.ruralhill.net.

New this year on Saturday at 6:30 PM is the “1st-in-a-real-long-time” ceilidh featuring Melinda Crawford, Father, Son, & Friends, Henri's Notions, Brian McNeill and Ed Miller.  Pronounced "KAY-lay," a ceilidh is a Scottish house party, concert and/or evening of informal Scottish dancing.  Come enjoy two hours packed with incredible Celtic music where singing, clapping, stomping, and dancing in the aisles is highly encouraged.  The field opens at 6 PM and tickets will be sold during the Games or separately at concert time: $10.  Food and beverages will be available.

Saturday and Sunday, April 19 & 20, Games activities begin at 8 AM and include the Amateur Athletic Competitions - Battle Axe, Climbing Wall, Highland Wrestling, Long Bow Archery, Heavy Stone Lift & Carry, and the Children’s Field Competitions.  Demonstrations include the popular Professional Scottish Heavy Events, Pipe Band Competitions, the Individual Piping & Drumming Competition, Highland Dancing, Scottish Fiddle Workshop & Competition, Scottish & Celtic music and Country Dancing, Historic Folk Life Encampment, Scottish American Military Society, 78th Fraser’s Highlanders, Dr. Ben Roy Ousley with his Border Collies, and more.

The origin of the Highland Games is firmly rooted in Scottish legend and in records going back some 1000 years, it is apparent that the arts of war formed the basis of many of the early gatherings. The Games were the best way to find and recruit the most exceptional athletes or warriors to improve the strength of the army.

Regular admission prices vary from $8 to $20 depending on the day or activities selected.  Saturday & Sunday Parking is $5 per vehicle and supports the Huntersville Lions Club and Rural Hill.  Parking fee includes one commemorative program per car valued at $5.  Tickets may be purchased at the gate and events will take place rain or shine.  Please visit www.ruralhill.net for full event schedules and additional information.
